Each of these documents raises familiar contemporary social issues, but in unfamiliar contexts from the past. This exercise will use the 12th Century BCE Hittite Plague Prayer Cycle, a letter written by a lawyer in the silver mining town of Leadville in the late 1800s, and documentary fragments from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1869 The American Woman’s Home. Then participants will pair up for a three-part immersion. We will look first at a model of a document and a fictional scene arising from it, and discuss an overview of the creative opportunities and challenges of writing a world/time/place other than the writer’s own.
